Only those who had been forced to do so will well and truly understand this. If it was not pointed out to me, I might still not be able to see it until this day. The fact was bright as day but I had blinders (those used on horses to keep their focus) on and ignored all the signs plus other people. If not because of my nosy friends, I might still be on blinders.

I just got a cup holder while I see others get shirts =( Maybe the staff saw that I am too fat... The standard gift given to everyone was a box of magnets. I had no idea why the heck but I soon found out =D

As usual biased towards Americans type of storyline. Had a good laugh but no one to share it with, maybe not so joyful after all. I suppose it's because I forgot to brush my teeth...

The reason why I have so few friends

I wouldn't say I got my mind blown by this but I have been enlightened long ago that I have no control over what others think nor speak of me thus I will control what I can control. Unbeknownst to many, parents will always want to impart good things to their children in hopes that they will do good as well. In following that line of teaching, I would say that I have been good to others especially those who have been good to me.

Another strange thing about me is that although I am HIGHLY unreligious, I know quite a fair bit of many religions. And one of the best teachings I have ever come across was, "do unto others as you would have done unto you". Some teachings calls this karma which essentially preaches the same thing i.e. what goes around, comes around.

Sucks to be an option and never a priority

This morning I read an article about a topic which I was introduced more than 10 years ago but never fully understood until I was really affected by it but not able to realize it still. It was with the help of an unlikely friend who was caring enough to act upon a news. This friend didn't need to spend time to reach out and pull me out of my darkness but I am glad my friend did it and I was able to stand up again although it still might cause a little unrest every time I think about those times.

Anyhows, all the main points touched upon were like hitting a nail squarely on its head. He said that when you are just an option:

• It hurts worse than anything
• It's the most embarrassing feeling in the world
• It makes you question your self worth
• Your future and your life have been completely altered, and it’s scary
• It makes you question your perception of the world, of life and of your personal reality
• It pisses you off and, in a way, motivates you
• It makes you realize you need to slow down, retrace your steps, regroup and redirect

It was like a revelation. All his writings echoed what was buried deep in me but strangely for me, I am not able to express it. In a way it was liberating that I was not alone. It is insanely ironic that I already know this since I was introduced to it more than 10 years ago LOL!

I feel that guys are sometimes poor souls that have to suffer in silence but have to put up a strong face each and every day. You know you have to stand up and move forward but it is like the signals to move never made it to your feet to move. You so want to move but unable to.

Sometimes you do things exactly the opposite of what your mind is telling you. Crazy as it sounds but what you want is to actually just get the response which you already know. Seriously, how dumb can you be???  Makes me wonder how many times do I have to tell myself to stop?

Maybe I'll start by putting some distance. Maybe I'll get another drink...

How to fix Buffalo CS-XL NAS EM issue OR upgrade to newer firmwares

I feel a strong obligation to share my entire day's worth of trial and error not to mention download hell. For those of you who owns Buffalo CS-XL NAS, you might have been disappointed with the results from Google for your problem. You are in luck because I will be helping you out if you got into the same error as I did OR you can upgrade your extremely outdated firmware :)

To make sure we are on the same page or rather using the same device, here is the picture of my device:

 My device, CloudStore CS-XL (doesn't really matter what is the size of the storage)

 

NOT our device, the LinkStation LS-XL most likely renamed because Cloudstore is the same name as the device by Synology

So why do I need to show you both? Any person with a passable eyesight would notice that both are too alike to NOT be the same. I have went through the testing and I can vouch that they are the same, well at least in terms of the firmware which is probably what lead you here.

If you have hit the error Emergency Mode (EM), verified using Buffalo's NAS Navigator software, you will be asked to update your firmware i.e. CloudStor v1.13 (the same as your current). Unfortunately for me, my device went into EM without the LEDs blinking nor did it turn red but it was inaccessible all the same. You may download the firmware here.

If you have successfully gotten your device to work again then congratulations! If you have not read on, same goes for those who wants to upgrade their firmware to a newer version.

At the point of this post was written, the latest available firmware is LinkStation v1.7 and the firmware can be downloaded here (please do download it, required for the next steps). Once you have gotten the firmware, extract the content and you should see a bunch of files. What is of concern to you are just 2 files, the LSUpdater.ini and LSUpdater.exe.

Open the LSUpdater.ini using notepad and you should see this:

Update the content to be like so, the changes are marked with RED. The CloudStore models are added into the file and it was recommended by other support sites that the VersionCheck field should be changed as well, that's what I did so I am sticking to it. Save the file with the new contents!!!

Make sure that your NAS is connected to a stable network and NAS Navigator is able to detect it plus it is in the same segment e.g. 192.168.0.*. Run LSUpdater.exe, it should be able to detect your NAS now. If you ran LSUpdater.exe without changing the values, your NAS will not be detected. Click Update. This process will take a while, at least 15-20 minutes as far as I can remember.

After the updater have done its work, you will be prompted a message. Mine said the firmware was NOT compatible BUT my NAS was still displaying steady blue LED light i.e. no issues and finally NAS Navigator is showing that my NAS is using the name I had assigned it and no more EM status. YAY!!!

Now try to access your updated NAS by using the IP as detected by NAS Navigator and you will notice a different looking login page:

MOST other people have reported that they CANNOT login back to their NAS because our previous screen DOES NOT ask for username! The username you should key in now is "admin" (without the quotes) and the password which you used to manage your NAS before this.

I hope you didn't encounter that issue, so if you didn't, CONGRATULATIONS! You have just updated your CloudStore with the latest firmware! To my delight, the bittorent client seems to have been updated as well, at least in terms of the look and feel. I hope this post was able to help you my fellow Buffalo CloudStore CS-XL users =) Cheers
